Without our health and well-being, we are not able to be the best version of ourselves. That’s why I train first thing in the morning. And being selfish in the wee hours of the morning doesn’t take away from family duties.
I train at 4:30 AM when school is in session and at 7:30 AM during breaks. When I can squeeze it into my evening schedule, I do high intensity interval cardio using either the StairMaster or a recumbent bike, and I now do metabolic resistance training (MRT) at RTG Training and Performance.
I lift weights at New Image. They offer a full membership for $395 that gives members access the gym 24/7 using a key fob. They have a pretty nice bathroom/shower facility for members who go straight to work after training in the morning.
I highly recommend the Strong app. It is very easy and intuitive. I input my own routine and am able to track weight, reps, and rest intervals. Very cool app. You can also create new routines on the fly. Pretty cheap. Get it at strongapp.io or the App Store.
I am also a proponent of tracking what I eat. I use My Fitness Pal. A sound diet is like a sound budget. Until I tracked my diet like I tracked my budget, I didn’t realize how much I was eating just like I didn’t know how much I was spending. I try to keep my macronutrient profile about 40/40/20 for protein/carbs/fat, though I’m not persnickity about it. As long as I am taking in quality protein before and after my workouts, and limiting white carbs throughout the day, I am usually pretty close to that.
I do not usually drink calories, besides dry red wine, or a few craft beers on the weekends. (Summertime is a challenge for me, especially on a hot day or socializing with friends!)
