Although I disagree with some of Dave Ramsey’s teachings, I love his mantra “Work equals money.” My own children were “kids on commission” from a young age just to anchor this notion in their world views – their operating system if you will.
But there are the people who seem to think success evades them because there are secrets to which they are not privy.
Why People Don’t Want to Work
There has always been (and always will be) the type of person who looks for shortcuts to success. They’re the ones who fall for “get rich quick” schemes. These are people who swing for the fences once in a great while when the mood strikes them. No homeruns? Then what? Back into the doldrums they go. The world is just out to get the little guy… You can’t get ahead… So on… so on.. ad infinitum.
'There is no substitute for hard work.' - Einstein Share on XWhat To Do
First, stop worrying about people who refuse to acknowledge fundamental truths, but be there for them when they are ready for your help. I am reminded of the famous quote (often attributed to the Buddha), “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.”
You’ll never accomplish anything trying to pull others out of the pit. People in the pit are lonely. After all, misery loves company. Maybe they don’t want to work toward something, because they are afraid of looking bad if they fail. Maybe they’re gun shy from a previous (perceived) failure.
Sometimes, I think people see the summit, but they ignore the climb. They may make excuses for the success of others, but we all know (in our hearts) there is no such thing as an overnight success.
In the end, all we can do is inject hope, provide information, and be there when they are ready for us.
